Schliemann unearthed ruins at the site of ancient Troy in 1872; a year later he found the so-called Priam’s Treasure (see “Priam’s Treasure”). He also excavated at Mycenaean sites on the Greek mainland—where in 1876 he uncovered the famous Shaft Graves of Mycenae. Now Schliemann was an international celebrity. In 1877 he gave a rousing speech to the Society of Antiquaries in Burlington, England (shown here).
