In 1957 an Iraqi oil company unearthed 20 underground tomb complexes—from the first and second centuries A.D.—in the desert outside Palmyra, Syria. One such complex, the Tomb of Artaban (shown here, compare with photo of limestone bust), is carved with ornate chambers and contains burial spaces for hundreds of dead.
