The mosaic floor from the acropolis church at Ma‘in (shown here, compare with photo of mosaic from the Upper Church of Massuh) illustrates a scene from the Book of Isaiah: “And the lion will eat straw like the ox” (Isaiah 65:25). The image-destroyers removed the tiles from the ox, scrambled them up and created shrubbery—though, perhaps out of a sense of fun, they left the ox’s tail and feet in place.
