Ever the showman, the 19th-century Italian adventurer Giovanni Belzoni posed for this portrait wearing an exotic Turkish caftan and turban. The picture appeared as the frontispiece of Belzoni’s 1820 book about his excavations in Egypt, Narrative of Operations and Recent Discoveries Within the Pyramids, Temples, Tombs and Excavations in Egypt and Nubia.
