The salt-heavy walls of Shali (shown here), a mountaintop town founded by Berber traders in 1203 A.D., are melting away. Many of the town’s buildings dissolved during an unusual three-day downpour that struck Siwa in 1926. Despite this severe erosion, Shali is still partially inhabited today.
