This photo shows two lines of foggara shafts running north from the escarpment into the oasis. Thanks to their foggara technology, the Garamantes were able to overcome the desert’s neglible rainfall and grow a wide variety of crops along the Wadi el-Agial (compare with cross-section of a foggara).
