During his wanderings in Arabia, Benjamin encountered many Muslim pilgrims who came “from distant lands to go unto Mecca.” This illustration, from the Maqamat, shows two such travelers making their way through a rustic village on the outskirts of Baghdad. Their elaborate tunics, headdresses and saddle trappings suggest that these particular pilgrims are wealthy Muslim lords.
