De Architectura was originally illustrated with drawings of architectural elements. But none of these drawings has survived. So author Thomas Gordon Smith and his colleague Matthew Aaron Rosenshine have tried to recreate Vitruvius’s illustrations by examining descriptions in his text and by studying the temples he mentions. This drawing depicts the Temple of Artemis at Magnesia-on-Maeander, which was designed around 200 B.C. by the Ionian architect Hermogenes (compare with photo of Ionic capital).
