With its harsh, angular lines and spartan decoration, the seventh-century B.C., 6-inch-high bronze stag seen here embodies an earlier, pre-Hellenic aesthetic. Unlike later, Greek-inspired works, the piece is sculpted in a simple, geometric style; its only stylistic flourish is the stag’s antlers, which are fashioned to resemble bird heads.
