The author’s mother, Ruth Tarnopolsky (shown here), visited Israel in 1960 and served as a volunteer for archaeologist Pesach Bar-Adon (center), who was then digging near Qumran. After uncovering a human skull in one of Qumran’s caves, she was wined and dined by Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion (the diminutive figure to the left of Bar-Adon).
