Joseph and Mary (on the left) present Jesus to the Jewish priest Simeon in the Temple, in this illumination from the Psalter of Queen Melisende (1131–1152). The Crusaders identified the Dome of the Rock/Templum Domini, depicted schematically above the figures, as the site of the biblical Temple where the young Jesus was recognized as the Messiah by Simeon (Luke 2:22–35). The Presentation of Christ was the principal feast of the liturgical calendar commemorated at the Templum Domini.
