The menacing glare of the god Bes was thought to frighten away evil. Bes was also associated with wine; he was thus an important deity for the grape-growing residents of the Bahariya Oasis. This magnificently preserved, 4-foot-high sandstone statue of the god was found in a temple, possibly dating to the New Kingdom (1539–1075 B.C.), not far from the Bahariya tombs.
