Agatha Christie, Max Mallowan and the members of Mallowan’s dig team pose for a group photo at Tell Chagar Bazar, in northern Syria. Mallowan oversaw excavations at the site from 1935 to 1936, uncovering an important cache of Hurrian pottery from the mid-second millennium B.C. and a hoard of cuneiform tablets dating from the reign of the northern Mesopotamian king Shamsi Adad (1813–1781 B.C.).
