Two celebrated burial grounds, one modern and one ancient, dot the landscape around Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. Just east of Tunis, at the site of the ancient Punic city of Carthage, rows of third-century B.C.E. stelae (shown here, compare with photo of American military cemetery) mark the graves of infants sacrificed to the Phoenician god Baal.
