One third-century B.C. stone (shown here, compare with previous two photos) bears a depiction of a priest carrying a small child. From this evidence, most (but not all) scholars conclude that the Tophet was a burial ground for infants sacrificed to the gods Tanit and Ba’al Hammon (see “An Odyssey Debate: Were Living Children Sacrificed to the Gods?”).
