A magnificent second-century A.D. Roman mosaic (shown here, compare with photo of partially intact villas) depicting the ocean gods Oceanus (left) and Tethys was one of the first artifacts to be rescued from the now partially flooded site of Zeugma in southeastern Turkey. Once the home of the Roman Empire’s easternmost military outpost, Zeugma has been known to archaeologists for decades.
