Hundreds of first- and second-century A.D. funeral stelae (shown here, compare with detail from funeral stela), many of them decorated with asters, wheels, braided rope patterns and Roman imperial eagles, have also been removed from the ancient city’s ruins. Some of these stones may have marked the graves of Roman soldiers in Zeugma’s IV Scythica legion.
