When the British planned a monument to house the world’s greatest art, now known as the British Museum, they took inspiration from the ancient Greeks, whose art they considered the source and culmination of all beauty. The museum’s architect, Robert Smirke, designed the building’s facade as an Ionic temple. Construction began in 1823 and was completed in 1847.
