Delicately carved trees (shown here, compare with photo of 5-inch-high ivory) impart a quiet serenity to the palace of the Assyrian king Sennacherib (704‒681 B.C.) at Nineveh. The walls of the huge palace were covered with gypsum reliefs showing the king’s military triumphs.
