Delicately removing the dust of battle from his skin, this life-size bronze youth was the star attraction in the Austrian Archaeological Institute’s first exhibition, in 1899, of its finds from Ephesus. The Austrians began excavating in 1895, under the direction of University of Vienna professor Otto Benndorf. Four years later Benndorf uncovered this lovely first-century A.D. statue in the harbor gymnasium.
