Pliny the Elder watches over the main portal of the cathedral in Como, Italy. Sculpted in 1480, Pliny’s statue, along with a matching image of his nephew, Pliny the Younger (born in 62 A.D. in Como), ignited a 200-year-long controversy, as church officials sought to remove pagans from the cathedral’s facade.
