Slightly over 5 feet tall, this third-century B.C.E. yakshi (or fertility) figure shows the sensual, stylized splendor of classical Indian sculpture. When Buddhism arrived in Gandhara, however, it encountered the more realistic, and sometimes more severe, qualities of Greco-Roman art (compare with photo of emaciated Buddha).
