Rising nearly 20 feet in height, the massive south temple facade of Ggantija (translated as “giantess” and pronounced jee-gun-tee’-ya) has brooded over the Maltese landscape for over 5,000 years. Recently, however, some of the huge megaliths have shifted outwards and support scaffolding has been installed. Archaeologists speculate that the ancient inhabitants of Gozo performed cultic rituals for a mother-earth goddess within Ggantija’s walls.
