Modern humans, Homo sapiens sapiens, first appeared in Europe around 43,000 years ago. Their magnificent art, such as the 17,000-year-old painting from Lascaux, France, shown here, and their high rounded skulls (see next photos) signal the presence of beings exactly like us.
