In the middle of the fourth millennium B.C., tokens began to be placed in hollow clay envelopes, sometimes with the contents of the envelope impressed on its surface. The spherical envelope shown here, from ancient Susa in present-day Iran, is impressed with seven markings representing the seven tokens it contained.
