Relief carvings of kings hunting leaping lions were common thousands of years before the Late Bronze Age—and survived long after. This 2.5-foot-high basalt stela, from the south Mesopotamian city of Uruk and dating to the late fourth millennium B.C.E., shows two images of a king hunting a lion with a spear and a bow and arrow.
