Paradoxically, both Pompeii and Herculaneum were “preserved” by the blast. Excavations at Pompeii have been going on for more than 200 years, gradually revealing an extremely prosperous city of public gardens, baths, theaters (shown here), civic buildings and lavish villas (see photo of villa).
