Paradoxically, both Pompeii and Herculaneum were “preserved” by the blast. Excavations at Pompeii have been going on for more than 200 years, gradually revealing an extremely prosperous city of public gardens, baths, theaters (see photo of theater), civic buildings and lavish villas (shown here).
