Ancient mariners had only one navigational instrument at their disposal: the sounding lead, a bell-shaped weight that was dropped into the water on a line. Sounding leads like the Byzantine example shown here (found off the coast of Haifa, Israel) were used both to measure water depth and to bring up samples from the seabed, enabling sailors to know what kind of anchor to use.
