The exposed nakedness of the female slave in this photo, clothed only in the chain that binds her, suggests her subservience and humiliation at the hands of her triumphant captor. The Etruscan artist who cast these small figurines around 700 B.C. captured something timeless and universal in human nature: our sense of the graphically naked body as shocking.
