So-called pillar figurines, such as the ones shown here are commonly found in first-millennium B.C. Judah (southern Israel). Similar depictions of women holding their breasts or presenting pregnant stomachs have been discovered at various Neolithic sites in the Near East—suggesting that symbolic imagery can indeed persist over long periods of time.
