Thales of Miletus, one of the earliest Greek philosophers, sits among implements of science in this early 17th-century engraving now in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Thales, who reportedly predicted a solar eclipse in 585 B.C., also used scientific reasoning to explain the nature of the cosmos.
