The 14-inch-long brick (shown here) was recently found at Abydos, in southern Egypt, by archaeologists with the University of Pennsylvania. Dating around 1700 B.C., the brick is decorated with a colorful scene (see drawing) showing an infant child. Women probably squatted on such bricks to give birth.
