King Mentuhotep II (2010–1998 B.C.) delivers a blow to an enemy in this relief from Deir el-Bahri, Egypt. The accompanying excerpt tells of another battle in which the pharaoh’s own soldiers were similarly dispatched by their enemies. Their bodies were found in a mass burial near Mentuhotep’s funerary monument in Deir el-Bahri.
