The fourth-century C.E. King Ezana obelisk soars 75 feet above the ancient city of Axum, Ethiopia. Carved from a single piece of stone, the obelisk is decorated with carvings of windows and doors. The stela is thought to be a funerary monument erected in honor of Axum’s first Christian ruler.
