The nomadic Sarmatians, a people of Iranian descent, took control of Samarkand after its period of Hellenistic rule. This silver Chinese mirror was found among the burial goods in a Sarmatian princess’s grave, some 20 miles north of Samarkand—an example of the luxury items that reached Central Asia via the Silk Road.
