A Sogdian trainer and his wide-eyed cheetah sit astride a horse in this Chinese terracotta from the early Tang period (seventh-eighth centuries A.D.). Not only were the Sogdians expert traders, but they also led caravans, groomed stallions and trained hawks and cheetahs. This particular Sogdian is clad in his typical costume, with a hooded cap, caftan, trousers and bootlets.
