In this symposium scene, from a 500 B.C. red-figure kylix (drinking cup) by the vase painter Douris, three men recline on couches, drinking wine and playing music. Such frolics could get out of hand; the fourth-century B.C. comic poet Eubulus observed that “wise guests go home” after three bowls of wine.
