St. Petersburg, The State Hermitage Museum

Four naked hetairai play music and drink wine at an all-female symposium depicted on this early-fifth-century B.C psykter, a vessel used for cooling wine. Painted by Euphronios, the 14-inch-high psykter now belongs to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. As we have no sources documenting the existence of all-female symposia, this scene is likely a fantastic creation of Euphronios, intended to amuse wealthy men.
