Archaic Greek artists also placed gorgons on bronze vessels, including the famous Vix krater (here, and on this issue’s cover), produced in the sixth century B.C. The gorgon, at once intricate and wild, appears on one of the vessel’s spiraled handles, startling the viewer—and perhaps frightening him, too.
