Our modern calendar was largely devised by Julius Caesar (100–44 B.C.), depicted in this marble bust now in Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum. Although Caesar wanted the year to begin with March, the Senate refused to change the date from January 1, which was the day after the Roman elections.
