Erotica—on cups, mirrors and oil lamps (such as the ceramic oil lamp shown here)—was popular in first-century A.D. Rome. Therefore, the presence of erotic art in a building doesn’t necessarily mean that the structure was a brothel—another difficulty faced by scholars trying to identify ancient bordellos.
