The relief carving—from the palace of the Assyrian king Assurnasirpal II (883–859 B.C.) at ancient Kalhu (the modern mound of Nimrud, in northern Iraq)—shows defenders trying to deflect the shaft of a battering ram with a chain. Two Assyrian soldiers use grappling hooks to pry the shaft free from the chain.
