A man seated upon a stool strums a lyre in this 4-inch-tall terracotta figurine from Greece dating to the end of the sixth century B.C. To tune his lyre, an ancient Greek musician would begin with two strings an octave apart, then build a sequence of notes using intervals known as fifths and fourths.
