“Use the sponge on the stick!” orders text on a wall of the Baths of the Seven Sages at Ostia. The drawing, showing Roman soldiers stationed near Hadrian’s Wall in England, shows just how to use the sponge; you moisten it in a water channel at your feet, use it as toilet paper, and then clean it in the channel for the next user.
