Toward the end of the fourth millennium, Mesopotamians developed a new system in which token shapes were incised on clay tablets. These tablets made careful use of space and size to represent different amounts of goods; large cone shapes placed above the circles denote large measures of grain, whereas the smaller cone shapes placed below the circles (in the tablet) denote small measures of grain.
