Toward the end of the fourth millennium, Mesopotamians developed a new system in which token shapes were incised on clay tablets. These tablets made careful use of space and size to represent different amounts of goods; the large cone shapes placed above the circles (on the tablet) denote large measures of grain, whereas smaller cone shapes placed below the circles denote small measures of grain.
