A beautiful, melancholy young woman is depicted in the mummy portrait unearthed by Flinders Petrie in the Fayum oasis. The second-century A.D. portrait was painted with a mixture of pigment and beeswax on a wooden panel originally attached to the case in which the woman’s mummified body was placed.
