The brushed, cropped hair of this middle-aged man dates his mummy portrait (now in the British Museum) to the reign of the emperor Trajan (98-117 A.D.). The man’s stern countenance and boldly contoured face convey an impression authority—a Roman Egyptian to be reckoned with.
