In the photo, the excavated Villa Arianna can be seen at the bottom, looking over the Bay of Naples. So far, half a dozen villas dating from the first century B.C. to the first century A.D. have been found at Stabiae. The dramatic volcano-like mound looming over the plain is not Mount Vesuvius but Monte Croce, part of the Monti Lattari chain.
